Conceptualised as a cantilevered resort on the steep mountainous terrain of Lonavala, the project explores an architectural approach that minimises land intervention while preserving the natural character of the site. By responding to the existing topography, the architecture extends into the landscape, creating a cohesive built environment that belongs to its mountainous setting rather than competing with it.
The design intent is to create an immersive retreat where architecture, interiors, and landscape come together in harmony with nature.
Three defining design strategies guide the architectural expression, relationship with the terrain, and overall experience of the resort.
The cantilevered approach allows the built form to extend over the steep terrain, responding to the site's natural contours. Rather than extensively reshaping the land, the architecture seeks to minimise its footprint and establish a distinctive relationship between built space and the mountain landscape.
Rooted in local architectural traditions and responsive to the region’s climate, materials, and cultural identity, the design promotes a sustainable approach to development. By integrating local craftsmanship, skills, and resources, the project aims to create meaningful livelihood opportunities and ensure that the surrounding community benefits from the development.
The surrounding valley becomes an integral part of the spatial experience. Carefully oriented spaces and expansive visual connections bring the landscape into everyday living, allowing changing light, distant horizons, and the mountain setting to define the atmosphere of the retreat.
